An average incapacity to work of 17.3 days per employee means a loss of €149 billion in gross value added for the German economy. 22.3% of all days of incapacity to work are caused by MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders), which can be prevented.
According to a study by the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAUA), the average days of incapacity to work was 17.3 days per employee (or 712.2 million days of incapacity to work nationwide), in the manufacturing industry, this proportion was even higher at 21.3%.
This means a loss of gross value added of € 149 billion and a loss of production of € 88 billion.
Musculoskeletal disorders account for a share of 22.3%, which means a loss of € 33.2 billion per year.
For the manufacturing industry (excluding the construction industry), the Federal Institute has determined a share of 26.3% (or 45.4 million working days lost) for MSDs, which corresponds to a loss of value-added of € 11.23 billion.
The figures speak for themselves, immense sums are lost every year due to work absenteeism, the question is what can be done about it. In an increasingly automated world of work, employees and their working time are becoming more and more valuable, and absences are becoming more and more difficult to compensate for.
The sums that are lost in value creation illustrate very simply how quickly measures to prevent downtime pay for themselves.
However, it is not only the apparent business aspect that should be taken into account when considering preventive measures; a good employer also looks out to ensure that his employees are healthy and satisfied.
One of the causes of musculoskeletal disorders is long periods of standing at work. Ergonomic workplace mats or anti-fatigue mats can help here.
The nature of the mats stimulates the vein-calf pump and thus keeps the circulation going. This prevents heavy legs, varicose veins and other venous diseases.
Furthermore, the cushioning of an anti-fatigue mat provides relief for joints and the entire musculoskeletal system. This prevents knee, back, shoulder and neck pain.
